Nazir Khalil (1916 - 2001), He specialized in painting and obtained several academic degrees, including a diploma in Applied Arts in 1937 and a Master of Art degree in 1938. He graduated from the Higher Institute of Art Education in 1945, joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1953, and received a scholarship from the Faculty of Education in 1972. He was a founding member of the Syndicate of Fine Artists in the field of painting and a member of the Teachers’ Syndicate. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Fine Arts Association until 1990 and was a member of the Fine Arts Lovers Association. Nazir Khalil worked at the Ministry of Education in the field of art education supervision and taught at Al-Tawfiqia Secondary School before becoming a supervisor and then a senior supervisor in the North Cairo Educational Administration, eventually holding the position of General Art Supervisor at the Ministry. He lived in Cairo and had a strong interest in rural landscapes.
He held numerous solo exhibitions, including ten exhibitions at the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art (Huda Sha’arawi House), six exhibitions at Atelier Cairo, five exhibitions at Golden Berg Gallery, and six exhibitions at Adam and Friedman Galleries. Additionally, he showcased his work at two exhibitions at the Italian Cultural Center and also exhibited at the French Cultural Center. He participated in numerous local group exhibitions, such as the Cairo Salon of the Fine Arts Lovers Association, the 22nd National General Exhibition in 1991, the Spring Exhibition, the National Fine Arts Association exhibitions, and the “Selected” exhibition at Cordoba Gallery for Arts in Mohandessin in 2009. He was also featured in a documentary exhibition at the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art in 2010, a group exhibition titled “Impressionism… A Modern Egyptian Vision at the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art in 2015, and was the guest of honor at the “Land of Gold 2” forum at Saad Zaghloul Cultural Center at Beit Al-Umma Museum in 2019. He later participated in the “Selections from the Past” exhibition at Saad Zaghloul Cultural Center - Beit Al-Umma Museum in 2019. On the international level, Nazir Khalil took part in an exhibition in Beijing in 1950, the Venice Biennale in multiple editions since 1953, the Baghdad Biennial in 1974, and an exhibition in Morocco in 1976. He had a keen interest in visiting art exhibitions and museums both in Egypt and abroad, touring museums in Rome, the Louvre Museum in France, and various museums and exhibitions in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.
Nazir Khalil was entrusted with various artistic assignments, including organizing and coordinating art education exhibitions for students and teachers at the Ministry of Education. He also contributed to organizing exhibitions for various artistic unions, such as the Association of Drawing and Crafts Professors and the League of Art Education Institutes and Colleges, where he was responsible for curating exhibitions based on different artistic methods and classifying works according to materials used. He wrote art articles for the Tarbiyah (Education) Newspaper and contributed to the publication of booklets and magazines issued by art professors, the Art Education Institute, and the National Fine Arts Association.
He received multiple local awards, including the Mokhtar Competition Prize for his work “The Return of the Pilgrims” in 1944, the Silver Medal in 1945, and the first prize for artists studying in Italy in 1958. His works are held in private collections in Egypt and abroad, while the Ministry of Culture acquired 20 of his works, and the Ministry of Education purchased 10. Additionally, three of his works are preserved at the Geography Museum, along with others housed at the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art in Cairo.
